The train-wreckably watchable Lindsay Lohan (TV’s Liz & Dick) and adult film star James Deen star in the erotic drama thriller The Canyons, directed by Paul Schrader (Cat People) and written by Bret Easton Ellis (author of American Psycho and Less Than Zero).
Arrogant young Los Angeles trust-fund baby Christian (Deen) is working on financing a horror film simply to keep his dad off his back. His girlfriend Tara (Lohan) is helping him with casting, and his producer, Gina (Amanda Brooks, Chillerama) is trying to get her boyfriend, struggling actor Ryan (Nolan Funk, Riddick) the lead role. Christian is also fond of inviting strangers into his home for threesomes or foursomes with the very willing Tara – and captures all the action on his smartphone. But unbeknownst to Christian and Gina, Ryan and Tara were once a couple, and as soon as the two meet again at an audition, their romance is rekindled. When Christian discovers that Tara has been having an affair, he begins to play a series of cruelly escalating mind games, leading to an act of violence from which there can be no redemption.
Despite a helluva lot of advance buzz (including a lead story in The New York Times Sunday Magazine), the film didn’t fare to well with the majority of critics or during its limited theatrical day-and-date VOD premiere in late July, 2013. Still, it’s undeniably intriguing stuff and Lohan offers a strikingly “adult” performance. Owen Gleiberman of Entertainment Weekly was one of the film’s defenders, writing that “[Schrader scores with Lohan, who taps a vulnerability beneath her dissolution to remind you why she’s still a movie star.”
The Canyons will be available on DVD and Blu-ray in its R-rated theatrical and unrated Director’s Cut versions, while the Director’s Cut will also be available on Blu-ray.
