Dennis Christopher in Breaking Away

Played, superlatively, by Dennis Christopher (Chariots of Fire), Dennis Quaid (The Long Riders), Daniel Stern (The Next Three Days), and Jackie Earle Haley (Watchmen), this is a group coming to terms with their own outsider status and realizing that they won’t be able to depend on each other forever.

In this sports comedy-drama, director Peter Yates (in a surprising departure from the likes of such films as Bullitt) gives us a lovely, sunlit interpretation of Steve Tesich’s Oscar-winning screenplay, which zeroes in on champion bicycle racer Dave (Christopher), his eternally exasperated father (Paul Dooley, The Mighty Wind), and his understanding mother (Barbara Barrie, Harvest); the result is a film that presents us with the Middle America of all our dreams.

Twilight Time’s Blu-ray debut of the film includes the following special features:

-Isolated Score Track
-Audio commentary with actor Dennis Christopher and film historians Julie Kirgo and Nick Redman
-Road to Adulthood
-Academy booster
-Original theatrical trailer
