The 1984 drama Places in the Heart is writer-director Robert Benton’s nostalgic but thoroughly unsentimental memory piece about growing up in a small Texas town during the Great Depression.

Sally Field in Places in the Heart

Sally Field in Places in the Heart

Focusing on a young widow (the Oscar-winning Sally Field, who was so fine in Lincoln, though we’ll always love her best in The Flying Nun) who suddenly has to support her two young children, the film celebrates the community she gathers around her: a black hobo (Danny Glover, 2012) who begins as a thief and winds up as a friend and mentor; a cranky blind boarder (John Malkovich, Secretariat); a pragmatic sister (Lindsay Crouse, House of Games) who is supporting her own family, including a husband (Ed Harris, The Way Back) with a penchant for her best friend (Amy Madigan, The Lifeguard). Their grit and determination are poignantly presented with an assist from the sterling cinematography of Nestor Almendros (Days of Heaven).

As supplier Twilight Time prints up only 3,000 copies of each title, be sure to keep an eye Twilight Time distributor Screen Archives’s for the announcement of the prebook date (usually 2-3 weeks before the title’s street date) and get ready to reserve!
