From 1981, Quartet, Merchant Ivory’s classic drama of sexual intrigue, stars Isabelle Adjani (Mammuth), Alan Bates (King of Hearts) and Maggie Smith (The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie).

After her shady husband Stephan (Anthony Higgins, The Draughtsman’s Contract) is imprisoned, vulnerable but complicated West Indian woman Marya (Adjani) finds shelter in the home of a manipulative and lecherous English art patron (Bates) and his painter wife (Smith). The twisted dynamic that develops between this trio plays out against a stunning re-creation of the golden age of 1920s Paris and its café culture and extravagant nightlife.

Based on the novel by acclaimed author Jean Rhys, the film was well-received, with Adjani winning the 1981 Cannes Film Festival Best Actress Award for her performance.

The Blu-ray and DVD both contain a wealth of bonus material, including “The Making of Quartet: A Conversation with James Ivory and Pierre Lhomme,” two new interviews with director James Ivory, conversations with the filmmakers, the film’s original trailer and the restoration trailer.
