An anthology of wildly diverse, star-studded short films about life in the big city, 1989’s New York Stories features the creative collaboration of Martin Scorsese (Taxi Driver), Francis Ford Coppola (The Godfather) and Woody Allen (Love and Death), arguably America’s three greatest filmmakers (that’s generally how they were regarded by in ’89).

In Martin Scorsese’s Life Lessons, Nick Nolte (Under Fire) stars as a world-famous painter torn between his obsession for his art and his infatuation with his sturdy but unresponsive assistant (Rosanna Arquette, Repo Chick). Francis Ford Coppola’s Life Without Zoe features Talia Shire (Windows) and Giancarlo Giannini (Seven Beauties) in a whimsical fantasy as the childlike parents of Zoe (Heather McComb), a very grown-up 12-year-old girl who brings charm and magic to life in New York. Woody Allen wrote, directs and stars in the comedy Oedipus Wrecks, concerning a neurotic lawyer who cannot escape the one woman who looms large in his life: his mother (Mae Questel, the legendary voice of Betty Boop). Mia Farrow (Rosemary’s Baby) and Julie Kavner (Radio Days) star as the “other women” who further complicate his situation.

Not one of the great ones, this omnibus is certainly worth a look-see to check out what a trio of filmmaking greats were up to in the middle of their careers.
