The high-definition Blu-ray debut of classic Academy Award-winning film To Kill a Mockingbird is a 50th Anniversary Edition.
Originally released in theaters in 1962, To Kill a Mockingbird is based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Harper Lee. The movie stars Gregory Peck (The Guns of Navarone) as Atticus Finch, a lawyer in Depression-era Alabama who defends a black man (Brock Peters, Soylent Green) against an undeserved rape charge and deals with prejudice against his own children.
To Kill a Mockingbird also stars Robert Duvall (Crazy Heart) in his first feature film role.
Nominated for eight Oscars, the drama movie won statues for Best Actor (Peck), Best Art Direction and Best Adapted Screenplay. It also was up for supporting actress Mary Badham (Our Very Own), Russell Harlan’s (Hawaii) cinematography, Robert Mulligan’s (Same Time, Next Year) direction, Elmer Bernstein’s (The Age of Innocence) score and the big Best Picture award.
The film was digitally remastered and fully restored for its 50th Anniversary Edition, which is available in DVD, a Blu-ray/DVD Combo pack and a Limited Edition Collector’s Series Blu-ray/DVD Combo pack.
The To Kill a Mockingbird Limited Edition Collector’s Series version includes a downloadable digital copy of the movie as well as the Blu-ray and DVD discs. The set is packaged in a hardcover book featuring script pages with Peck’s hand-written notes, storyboards, poster art and more.
All three versions include these special features:
- feature-length documentary “Fearful Symmetry” about the making of To Kill a Mockingbird, with cast and crew interviews and a look at author Lee’s hometown
- feature-length documentary “A Conversation With Gregory Peck,” with interviews, film clips, home movies and more
- “100 Years of Universal: Restoring the Classics” about the movie’s restoration process
- Peck’s Academy Award acceptance speech
- Peck’s remarks after receiving the American Film Institute Life Achievement Award
- excerpt from “Tribute to Gregory Peck,” his daughter Cecilia Peck’s farewell to her father given at the Academy in celebration of his life
- “Scout Remembers,” with actress Badham remembering her experiences working with Peck
- commentary with director Mulligan and producer Alan Pakula
- the movie’s original theatrical trailer.
The Blu-ray/DVD Combo packs also have digital copy, U-Control Scene Companion, allowing viewers to watch interviews and see photos picture-in-picture during the movie with narration by Peck’s family, and Universal’s usual Blu-ray features, including BD-Live and the Pocket Blu app.
The release of these 50th Anniversary Editions is part of Universal Studios’ 100th Anniversary celebration.
The documentary Hey Boo: Harper Lee & To Kill a Mockingbird, about the life of author Lee, was released on DVD in July 2011.
