Albert NobbsIn the great tradition of Victor Victoria and Tootsie, the period drama film Albert Nobbs stars six-time Oscar-nominee Glenn Close (TV’s Damages) as a woman playing a man.

Based on the novella by Irish author George Moore, the movie tells the story of a woman (Close) in 19th century Ireland who learns to survive by living and working as a man. But after 30 years of donning men’s clothing to fit into her surroundings, Nobbs finds herself in her own prison.

Close and co-star Janet McTeer (The Woman in Black) were nominated for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress Academy Awards, respectively. Both also were nominated for Golden Globes but didn’t win. The movie’s original song “Lay Your Head Down” (music by Brian Byrne and lyrics by Close) also was nominated for a Globe, and Albert Nobbs was nominated for an Oscar for its makeup design.

Albert Nobbs Blu-ray boxDirected by Rodrigo Garcia (Mother and Child), the film also stars Mia Wasikowska (Jane Eyre), Aaron Johnson (Chatroom) and Jonathan Rhys Meyers (From Paris With Love).

Although critics were wowed by Close’s appearance as Albert, the film got mixed reviews. As Matthew DeKinder, critic with the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, wrote: “Sadly, great performances do not a great film make.”

Rated R, Albert Nobbs was screened in a limited number of theaters and grossed $2 million.

Both the DVD and Blu-ray contain an audio commentary and deleted scenes.
