Timoth Spall leads his store staff in The Syndicate.

The popular British television drama The Syndicate, Series 1 makes it U.S. DVD debut just as Series 2 premieres on BBC TV in its native England.

Created by Kaye Mellor, the series follows five cash-strapped supermarket employees bracing for their store’s imminent shutdown as their lottery pool wins big. It seems like a godsend—but the “syndicate” soon learns that good fortune can come at a high price as the unlikely millionaires walk the tightrope between ruin and reward. Each of the five episodes in Series 1 is centered on a different employee: Brother Stuart (Matthew McNulty) and Jamie (Matthew Lewis) are haunted by a crime of desperation; store manager Bob (Timothy Spall, Life Is Sweet) faces a daunting health crisis; reserved Leanne (Joanna Page) finds her past catching up with her; and kindhearted Denise (Lorraine Bruce) endures a troubled marriage.

In February 2013, ABC-TV announced it had ordered a pilot for a US remake to be named Lucky 7. The remake is expected to replicate the original show’s format, with each episode focusing on a different character and each season following a new group of characters
