New Release: Red Cliff DVD and Blu-ray

Red Cliff movie sceneJohn Woo’s (Windtalkers) stylish and acclaimed Red Cliff was released on DVD and Blu-ray on March 23, 2010, priced at $26.98 and $29.98, respectively.

The stunning foreign-language war movie grossed less than $1 million at the box office, but it had a very limited run in theaters. It was available on video-on-demand at the same time as its theatrical debut, though, a common release strategy for Magnolia Home Entertainment.

Red Cliff Blu-ray boxI saw the film as a high-definition download from Xbox Live and can say it’s one movie that’s definitely worth the extra bucks for the better video and audio quality. Woo’s film is beautiful, and the action and interesting strategy techniques will keep even the most foreign-language-averse viewer’s eyes on the screen.

The movie, starring Tony Leung (Tokyo Raiders), tells the story of the epic 208 A.D. battle when General Cao Cao, with permission of the Han dynasty Emperor, forms a movement to destroy two warlords who stand in Cao Cao’s way. The outnumbered warlords are David vs. the greedy and much bigger Cao Cao.

Red Cliff was awarded five Hong Kong Film Awards in 2009, including Best Art Direction, Best Costume and Make Up Design and Best Visual Effects, as well as other honors.
