Blu-ray, DVD Release: The Karate Kid (2010)

The Karate Kid movie scene with Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan2010’s The Karate Kid, the remake starring Jackie Chan and Jaden Smith, was released on DVD and Blu-ray on Oct. 5, 2010, from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment.

Although the spirit of the family movie is the same, this new Karate Kid takes a bit of a departure from the 1984 original. Instead of a boy moving to California, in this new movie, a 12-year-old boy (Smith) moves to Beijing, China, because of his mother’s job. Like the older movie, Smith’s character, Dre, falls for a girl and makes enemies with the class bully. Enter the maintenance man (Chan), who is secretly a master of kung fu. Chan’s Han teaches Dre the true spirit of kung fu — note, not karate — and Dre learns to stand up for himself against the bullies.

Rated PG, the new movie grossed $173 million at the box office, showing either the resilience of the sports action film franchise or audiences’ desire to see more of Will Smith’s son, who wowed us all in The Pursuit of Happyness.

On DVD, The Karate Kid was priced at $28.96, with a single Blu-ray at $34.95 and a Blu-ray/DVD combo pack at $38.96. The Blu-ray/DVD combo pack includes a downloadable digital copy.

The DVD contains these special features:

  • “Chinese Lessons” interactive feature
  • “Just for Kicks: The Making of The Karate Kid” and
  • music video of Justin Bieber’s “Never Say Never” featuring Jaden Smith.

The Blu-ray and Blu-ray/DVD combo pack also will have these special features:

  • alternate ending “Watch Jackie Chan Fight!”
  • “On Location: The Karate Kid Interactive Map of China”
  • “Production Diaries Hosted by Jackie Chan”
  • and Sony’s MovieIQ+Sync BD-Live feature, which allows viewers to access information about the movie and the movie’s cast while they watch the film.

The original Karate Kid, starring Ralph Macchio and Pat Morita, was released on Blu-ray in June.
