New Release: The Walking Dead Season 1 Blu-ray and DVD

The Walking Dead Blu-ray boxThe hottest zombie offering of 2011, TV’s The Walking Dead, came to Blu-ray and DVD on March 8, 2011, from AMC (the television show’s home network) and Anchor Bay Entertainment. The Walking Dead: Season One was priced at $39.98 for DVD and $49.99 for Blu-ray.

Based on the popular comic book series by Robert Kirkman, The Walking Dead premiered on AMC in Halloween 2010 and has since become one of the most popular shows in the cable channel’s history (move over, Mad Men!).

Executive produced by Frank Darabont (writer/director of The Shawshank Redemption, who also co-wrote all of the Dead episodes and directed the premiere), the six-episode series tells the ghoulish tale of the aftermath of a zombie apocalypse, wherein the country — and possibly the world — has fallen prey to a plague of the flesh-eating undead.

A bunch of survivors led by a pair of cops (Andrew Lincoln and Jon Bernthal) try to survive in the ensuing months, scavenging across Atlanta and its outskirts in search of food, guns, sanctuary and some sign of hope. Through it all, there’s a lot of graphic zombie mayhem (cannibalism, decapitations, shotgun shells to the head and much more) and some genuinely effective human drama.

Both the DVD and Blu-ray include these special features:

  • making-of featurette
  • and behind-the-scenes footage.
  • “Inside The Walking Dead: Episode 1-6″
  • Sneak peak with Robert Kirkman
  • “Behind-the-Scenes Zombie Makeup Tips”
  • convention panel with the show’s producers
  • and extra footage of “Zombie School,” “Bicycle Girl,” “On Set With Robert Kirkman,” “Hanging With [actor] Steven Yeun,” “Inside Dale’s RV” and “On Set With Andrew Lincoln.”

All the season-one episodes were already available for download on standard-definition or high-definition.
