New Release: Upstairs, Downstairs Complete Series 40th Anniversary DVD

Upstairs, Downstairs TV show sceneThe beloved 1970s British TV drama series Upstairs, Downstairs, which was remade by the BBC, was delivered in a DVD megaset with lots of new special features on March 29, 2011, by Acorn Media.

The iconic series about life in Edwardian England has been released on DVD before, but Acorn’s Upstairs, Downstairs Complete Series 40th Anniversary Edition contains a whopping 25 hours of new extras and collectible gold foil packaging.

The TV show, which originally aired from 1971 to 1975, follows the lives of the family and servants of the London townhouse at 165 Eaton Place. Among the residents are Richard Bellamy (David Langton, TV’s The Spoils of War), the head of the upstairs household and a member of Parliament, and Hudson (Gordon Jackson, The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie), the Scottish butler who takes care of the staff downstairs. Real-life events that took place between 1903 and 1930 are incorporated into the stories.

The TV drama was co-created by and stars Jean Marsh (Willow), who is reprising her role of housemaid Rose Buck in the new version of Upstairs, Downstairs.

The original series won seven Emmy Awards, two BAFTAs (the British equivalent to the Academy Awards), a Golden Globe and a Peabody. According to Acorn, it has been seen by a billion people in 40 countries.

The new 40th Anniversary DVD set, priced at $199.99, contains 21 discs with all 68 episodes plus these special features:

  • five-part behind-the-scenes documentary
  • commentaries on 24 episodes,
  • the retrospective 25th anniversary featurette Upstairs Downstairs Remembered
  • interviews with the stars, composer and editor
  • alternate pilot episode
  • and essay by Marsh.

The 25th anniversary featurette was on the Upstairs, Downstairs: The Complete Series DVD released in 2005.

Also on March 29, Acorn released Upstairs, Downstairs Series 1 and Upstairs, Downstairs Series 2 in individual four-DVD sets, priced at $49.99 each. Individual sets of the last three seasons were released later this year.
