Filmmaker Rob Reiner’s coming-of-age movie Stand By Me turned 25 in 2011, and Sony Pictures Home Entertainment celebrated with the film’s debut on high-definition Blu-ray
on March 22, 2011.
Based on the novella by Stephen King
, 1986’s Stand By Me stars Corey Feldman (The Goonies), River Phoenix (Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade), Jerry O’Connell (Piranha) and Wil Wheaton (TV’s Star Trek: The Next Generation) as a group of friends in a small Oregon town who, after the death of a friend, set out on a two-day trek to find the body of a missing boy. Along the way, they sneak smokes, tell tall tales and, when they encounter the town’s knife-wielding hoods, make some self discoveries. Kiefer Sutherland (TV’s 24) and Richard Dreyfuss (TV’s Weeds) also star in the film.
The Stand By Me 25th Anniversary Edition Blu-ray ($24.95) includes new special features including a video reunion with Reiner, Wheaton and Feldman and “25 Years Later,” a video commentary retrospective with the director and two actors. Other special features on the disc are:
- audio commentary with Reiner
- featurette “Walking the Tracks: The Summer of Stand By Me“
- and the “Stand By Me” music video.
The R-rated movie, which grossed a tidy $47 million in 1986, was nominated for an Academy Award (best screenplay) and two Golden Globes (best picture—drama and best director).
A new DVD version was not released, but the film is already available on DVD.
