Moby Dick scene

Ethan Hawke (l.) and William Hurt go whale hunting in Moby Dick.

Herman Melville’s revered 1851 novel is adapted into a two-part original miniseries in this version of Moby Dick, which premiered on cable TV’s Encore in August.

William Hurt (Broadcast News) stars as Captain Ahab, the obsessed ship captain determined to hunt down and destroy the white whale that nearly killed him years earlier, Charlie Cox (Stardust) as the young sailor Ishmael, Ethan Hawke (Daybreakers) as first mate Starbuck and Raoul Trujilo (Apocalypto) as the expert harpooner Queequeg.

The adventure miniseries was positively received by critics. The New York Times described it as “an ambitious, beautifully made adventure tale that seeks to be respectful of the book while still making the characters and story accessible to modern viewers.”

I’ve got to admit that I never finished reading the book — I sorta put it down after “Call me Ishmael” — but this lavish-looking television miniseries looks like it’s worth catching.
