Super 8 movie scene

A train crash unleashes a sense of wonder in Super 8.

Writer/director J.J. Abrams’ (Star Trek) science-fiction adventure movie Super 8 offers an almost Spielbergian sense of wonder and adventure. And it’s no wonder, as the 2011 summer hit is co-produced by the legendary Steven Spielberg (Jaws) himself.

The film’s story follows a group of kids in a small Ohio town who witness a catastrophic train crash one night while they’re filming a Super 8 movie. When the group realizes that the crash was more than just an accident, they set out to find the truth — which turns out to be something more shocking than any of them could have imagined.

A lively blend of adventure, action, mystery, science-fiction, humor and, yes, some Spielberg-ish heart, the PG-13-rated Super 8 stars Kyle Chandler (TV’s Friday Night Lights), Elle Fanning (Somewhere), Gabriel Basso (TV’s The Big C), Zach Mills (Kit Kittredge: An American Girl) and Ron Eldard (TV’s Blind Justice), along with newcomers Joel Courtney, Riley Griffiths and Ryan Lee.

Released wide to theaters to generally positive reviews from critics, Super 8 rang up a  healthy $126 million at the domestic box office.

While the DVD edition of Super 8 only includes the feature film and a digital copy, the Blu-ray/DVD combo pack offers the following bonus features:

  • commentary by writer/director J.J. Abrams, producer Bryan Burk and cinematographer Larry Fong
  • behind-the-scenes featurettes
    • “The Dream Behind Super 8″
    • “The Search for New Faces”
    • “Meet Joel Courtney”
    • “Rediscovering Steel Town”
    • “The Visitor Lives”
    • “Scoring Super 8
    • “Do You Believe in Magic?”
    • “The 8mm Revolution”
  • Deconstructing the Train Crash
  • deleted scenes
