Promised LandMatt Damon (Good Will Hunting) and Frances McDormand (Moonrise Kingdom) are at odds over the environment in Promised Land.

Based on a story by David Eggers (Where the Wild Things Are), the drama movie brought Damon back to writing and partnered him with The Office‘s John Krasinski on screenplay duties.

Both also star in the film. Damon plays corporate salesman Steve Butler who’s a former farm boy turned big-time player. He’s tested, however, when he goes back to his hometown with partner Sue Thomason (McDormand) to offer the residents some much needed economic relief. They want to buy drilling rights, but the job is complicated by a respected schoolteacher (Hal Holbrook, The Firm), a slick environmentalist (Krasinski) and Butler’s interest in a local woman (Rosemarie DeWitt, Your Sister’s Sister).

Promised Land Blu-ray boxDirected by Gus Van Sant (Restless), Promised Land got mixed reviews from critics. The R-rated film was described as “awkward and contrived” by Globe and Mail‘s Liam Lacey, but Richard Roeper was a little kinder, saying, “This is a solid if at times too conventional tale of a classic moral conflict.”

The movie was released in a small group of theaters, grossing $7.6 million, but the DVD, Blu-ray and digital release give Promised Land its biggest audience.

Both the Blu-ray and DVD carry these special features:

  • extended scene
  • making-of featurette.

The Blu-ray/DVD Combo pack also includes a downloadable digital copy of the film and instant streaming via UltraViolet.
