Scavenger Hunt movie sceneThe 2012 documentary film Scavenger Hunt chronicles the dilemma between the majestic California Condor and man, as the condors are being poisoned by lead that they contract from eating the flesh of deer with lead ammunition fragments.

The California Condor neared extinction in the 1980s until biologists nurtured the population and saw their numbers grow upward to over 400.

The problem that has developed regarding the lead poisoning is examined by filmmakers Matthew Podolsky and Eddie Chung, who cover the situation with expert Chris Parish, the Condor Program Director charged with protecting the birds…and a lifelong hunter! As offered by Podolsky and Chung, Parish is the link to reconciling card-holding NRA members with the EPA activists through his efforts to convert hunters voluntarily to non-lead ammunition. Thus, the stage is set for Scavenger Hunt, wherein an endangered species recovery project has become a political battle with the most powerful lobbying group in the county.

The hour-long, unrated movie played a number of film festivals over the past year, including the Yosemite International Film Festival, where it won the Special Jury Prize.

Bonus features on the DVD include the following:

  • deleted scenes: Lead & Eagles, A Lead Bullet Study
  • outtakes: A Day in the Life of a Condor Biologist, Life in the Canyon, Loons & Lead, The Effects of Lead on Humans
  • trailer
