R.I.P.D.Inspired by the comic book of the same name, R.I.P.D. could be called Men in Black with ghosts.

The action movie stars Ryan Reynolds (Safe House) and Jeff Bridges (Crazy Heart) as two cops in the Rest In Peace Department, dedicated to protecting the living from destructive spirits.

Bridges is Roy Pulsifer, the veteran sheriff and equivalent to Tommy Lee Jones’ Kay. Like Kay, Roy isn’t too happy to be partnered with newcomer Nick Walker (Reynolds). But when they uncover a plot that could end all life, they must find a way to work together of watch the afterlife release angry souls onto Earth.

Kevin Bacon (X-Men: First Class) and Mary-Louise Parker (TV’s Weeds) also star in the comedy film, which was directed by Robert Schwentke (Red) from a script by Phil Hay and Matt Manfredi, the team behind Clash of the Titans.

Unfortunately, R.I.P.D. didn’t score even close to the kudos received by Men in Black or even Schwentke’s Red. The movie’s critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes was even lower (11%) than the screenwriters’ Clash of the Titans (28%). TIME Magazine‘s Richard Corliss wrote of R.I.P.D., “A half-hour into the film and it feels like the eighth day of jury duty.” Ouch!
