Titus movie scene

Anthony Hopkins is a noble but misguided Roman general in Titus.

Julie Taymor’s (Frida) stunning 1999 cinematic adaptation of William Shakespeare’s first tragedy, Titus arrives on Blu-ray for the first time in January, 2014.

Anthony Hopkins (Hitchcock) as a noble but misguided Roman general who finds himself ensnared in an unwinnable war of vengeance with an implacable barbarian queen (Jessica Lange, TV’s American Horror Story). With its time-bending mix of elements from Ancient Rome, Fascist Italy, Fifties America, and Punk Britain, Taymor’s radical re-imagining of the classic tragedy offers a dark vision of violence, murder, rape, and revenge.

Adapted for the screen by Taymor, Titus also stars Jonathan Rhys Meyers (Velvet Goldmine), Alan Cumming (Any Day Now) and Angus Macfadyen (Equilibrium).

A critical favorite upon its U.S. theatrical release in December, 1999, Stephen Holden of The New York Times described the R-rated Titus as “Shattering…a coup de cinema…a fine, provocative film.”

As supplier Twilight Time prints up only 3,000 copies of each title, be prepared to pre-order this one directly from distributor Screen Archives as soon as the prebook date is announced, which will probably be in late-December.
