The naturalistic play concerns a wealthy aristocrat (Chastain) and her father’s valet (Farrell) whose innocent flirtation turns into a heated and dangerous affair that tests the boundaries of class and desire.

Directed by Ingmar Bergman’s go-to gal Liv Ullmann (Face to Face), the PG-13-rated film also features Samantha Morton (Cosmopolis) in its small cast.

As Strindberg is considered to be one of the greatest playwrights who ever lived (Tennessee Williams, Edward Albee, John Osborne and Bergman have all sited him as a major influence), it’s rather surprising to see that his name isn’t mentioned on Lionsgate’s press release or the box cover copy. It’s got me wondering as to whether this barely-there limited theatrical release is the kind of entry that will do well with its stars’ younger followers rather than lovers of the great playwright, who might not even know the film has been released (or made for that matter….).

As a bonus feature, the DVD includes interviews with Ullmann and Chastain.
