Will Smith in Concussion

Will Smith in Concussion

Based on a true story, the biographical sports drama  Concussion stars Will Smith (Focus) as Dr. Bennet Omalu, a Nigerian immigrant and forensic neuropathologist who diagnoses a new brain disease and its link to concussion-related injuries in football players

Omalu was the neuropathologist who made the first discovery of CTE, a football-related brain trauma, in a pro player and fought for the truth to be known. In the film, Omalu’s emotional quest puts him at dangerous odds with one of the most powerful – and beloved – institutions in the world.

Written and directed by Peter Landesman, Concussion  also stars Alec Baldwin (Still Alice), Arliss Howard (Full Metal Jacket), Paul Reiser (Whiplash), Luke Wilson (Middle Men) and Albert Brooks (This is 40).

The film didn’t do all that well at the domestic box office, petering out at about $35 million during its domestic theatrical run in December and January. It performed with equally tepid results with the critics—according to Rotten Tomatoes, it averaged a 60% rating based on the 164 published reviews. It makes you wonder what Jada Pinkett-Smith was getting so worked up about when her hubbie wasn’t nominated for an Oscar.
