Florence Pugh stars in the British period drama-thriller Lady Macbeth, the title of which gives you a hint as to the motivations and possible actions of its “heroine.”

In 1865 rural England, Katherine (Pugh) is stifled by her loveless marriage to a bitter man twice her age, whose family is cold and unforgiving. When she embarks on a passionate affair with a young worker (Cosmo Jarvis) on her husband’s estate, a force is unleashed inside her, so powerful and potentially murderous that she will stop at nothing to get what she wants.

Catherine Pugh is Lady Macbeth

Adapted from Nikolai Leskov’s 1865 novella “Lady Macbeth of Mtsenk” (which was originally published in Fyodor Dostoyevsky magazine Epoch), Lady M marks a fine feature debut for filmmaker William Oldroyd and an outstanding showcase for up-and-comer Florence Pugh. The work of the two (not to mention cinematographer Ari Wegner, who shoots it all with style and intensity) ensures that the film doesn’t play like a Lady Chatterley’s Lover or Wuthering Heights knock-off.

A critic favorite upon its limited theatrical release in July, 2018 (it garnered an 89% Fresh rating at aggregator Rotten Tomatoes), the DVD incarnation of Lady Macbeth includes a behind-the-scenes featurette.
