The animated comedy adventure movie The Emoji Movie arrives to unlock the never-before-seen secret world inside your smartphone.

Hidden within the messaging app is Textopolis, a bustling city where all your favorite emojis live, hoping to be selected by the phone’s user. In this world, each emoji has only one facial expression – except for Gene (T.J. Miller, TV’s Silicon Valley), an exuberant emoji who was born without a filter and is bursting with multiple expressions. Determined to become “normal” like the other emojis, Gene enlists the help of his handy best friend Hi-5 (James Corden, Into the Woods) and the notorious code breaker emoji Jailbreak (Anna Faris, Take Me Home Tonight). Together, they embark on an epic “app-venture” through the apps on the phone, each its own wild and fun world, to find the code that will fix Gene.

Savaged by the critics, The Emoji Movie nonetheless rang up a not-bad $86 million at the domestic box office upon its wide release in July, 2017… and another $122 million around the world! It’s remarkable how inconsequential critics are sometimes…

As for the movie itself, well, it’s not all that funny, and maybe that’s because it’s always trying to justify the alarming image of the children in the film hypnotized (and nearly roboto-cized!) by their cell phones. There’s no denying that cell phones and their accompanying technologies are a good tool and improve our day-to-day lives. And the phones ubiquitous emojis? Well, they’re cute and colorful and it’s understandable that studio executives see them as the kind of subject that could fuel a feature-length animated movie. And they’ve certainly done their job putting cash into the producers’ wallet. But in a movie, well, they ain’t as fun as Legos!
