One part underdog sports drama and one part political thriller, the international co-production The Fencer is inspired by the true-life story of celebrated Estonian fencing champion Endel Nelis.

Märt Avandi is The Fencer.

Fleeing from the Russian secret police in the early 1950s because of his controversial past, young Estonian fencer Endel Nelis (Märt Avandi) is forced to return to his homeland, where he finds work as a teacher and starts a sports club for his students. Teaching them his great passion, fencing, Endel becomes a father figure and role model to his children, many of whom have been orphaned as a result of the Russian occupation, which ultimately brings him into conflict with the school’s principal. When the children want to participate in a national fencing tournament in Leningrad, Endel must make a choice: risk everything to take the children to Leningrad or put his safety first and disappoint them.

Directed by acclaimed Finnish filmmaker Klaus Härö (Letters to Father Jacob), The Fencer won the Jussi Award (Finland’s Oscar) for Best Film and Best Cinematography, was a Best Foreign Language Film nominee for the 2016 Golden Globes, and was Finland’s official selection for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language film for 2016.

Presented in Finnish with optional English subtitles, the DVD includes an interview with director Klaus Härö and select scene director’s video commentaries as bonus features
