The Joy Luck ClubDirector Wayne Wang’s (Snow Flower and the Secret Fan) epic drama movie The Joy Luck Club was digitally restored for its high-definition Blu-ray debut.

The 1993 film is based on Amy Tan‘s acclaimed, best-selling novel (Tan also co-wrote the screenplay with What Dreams May Come‘s Ronald Bass). The movie tells the story of four older Chinese immigrant women living in San Francisco and their adult Chinese-American daughters (including Ming-Na, TV’s ER). As each reflects upon the past, they also guide each other through their present, including dealing with different cultures and ideas.

Rated R, The Joy Luck Club was called “one of the most touching and moving of the year’s films” by critic Robert Ebert, “refreshing and bittersweet” by Washington Post‘s Desson Thomson and “sweeping and intimate, a lovely evocation of changing cultures and enduring family ties” by New York Times‘ Janet Maslin.

Sadly, the Blu-ray comes empty of special features, but this gorgeous film in high-definition is enough.
