Inspired by Ingmar Bergman’s 1955 Smiles of a Summer’s Night, the film focuses on a nutty inventor (Allen), his frustrated wife (Mary Steenburgen, Dirty Girl), a philosopher cousin (Jose Ferrer, Fedora), his much younger fiancée (Mia Farrow, making her first appearance in an Allen film), a randy doctor (Tony Roberts, Annie Hall), and a free-thinking nurse (Julie Hagerty, A Master Builder) – the possibilities, of course, are endless.

Gorgeous shot by the great Gordon Willis (Broadway Danny Rose), the film features a score by Felix Mendelssohn, which is featured in this Twilight Time release in an isolated score track.
