The well-liked 1965 Western Cat Ballou is a delightful comic piece starring Jane Fonda (Barbarella) and Lee Marvin (Emperor of the North).

Fonda stars as the titular big-hearted beauty, who hires a notorious gunman to avenge her father’s death. Kid Shelleen (Oscar-winner Marvin, who also appears as his own evil brother) turns out to be a has-been drunk…until he pulls himself together in an effort to assist the embattled Cat.

Directed by Elliot Silverstein from a screenplay by Walter Newman and Frank Pierson, the movie also stars Michael Callan, Dwayne Hickman (TV’s Dobie Gillis), and Tom Nardini. Also on board are Nat King Cole and Stubby Kaye as a pair of troubadours who narrate the tale via songs by Mack David and Jerry Livingston.
