Writer-director Douglas McGrath (Emma) brings us a cleverly pared-down but potent version of Charles Dickens’ massive and often darkly humorous study of Victorian corruption, the 2002 period drama-comedy Nicholas Nickleby.

nicholas-nickleby-1_optThe extraordinary cast includes Christopher Plummer (Remember) as Nicholas’ evil financier uncle; Jim Broadbent (Le Week-End) and Juliet Stevenson (Triage) as the loathsome Mr. and Mrs. Squeers; and, more brightly, Anne Hathaway (The Intern), Jamie Bell (The Eagle) and Charlie Hunnam (Pacific Rim) as Nicholas.

The PG-rated film is also highlighted by a score from Rachel Portman, available on this Twilight Time release as an isolated track.
