Though it didn’t receive much praise upon its theatrical release a couple of months back (The New York Times offered that it contained “sex and violence of unusual puerility”). The crime thriller Lucky Day, the latest film from writer/director Roger Avary (co-writer of Pulp Fiction and maker of the 1995 heist flick Killing Zoe), is now without its pleasures.

The film revolves around safe-cracker Red (Luke Bracey, The November Man), who gets out of prison to rejoins his wife (Nina Dobrev, The Arena) and daughter and hopefully go straight. But psychotic French hit-man Luc (a crazed Crispin Glover of Back to the Future fame) has also come to town, seeking revenge against Red for the death of Luc’s brother — leading to one helluva long and sorta unlucky day.

It plays like a Nineties throwback, yes, but the violence is crazed, Nina is hot, and there’s definitely some nasty fun to be had.
