Universal Studios Home Entertainment used the theatrical release of the Nanny McPhee sequel, Nanny McPhee Returns, to springboard the original onto Blu-ray. The original Nanny McPhee hit Blu-ray on Aug. 17, 2010.
Based on the books by Christianna Brand, Nanny McPhee is a Mary Poppins-style fantasy tale with a lot more warts. Nanny McPhee (played by Emma Thompson, An Education) is a no-nonsense and rather odd lady who is hired to take care of a man’s unruly children. She’s the 18th nanny the youngsters have had, after managing to scare off all 17 others. As a lady looking to be their next mother (Celia Imrie) — or at least, the wife of the wealthy father (Colin Firth, A Summer in Genoa) — starts coming around, the children make it clear that she’s not welcome. But love is lurking, and it’s Nanny McPhee to the rescue.
Also in the cast are Angela Lansbury as the nosy aunt, No Country For Old Men‘s Kelly Macdonald as the skullery maid and young Thomas Sangster (Love Actually) as the leader of the mischievous kids.
(For the new film, Thompson reprises her role, but Nanny McPhee helps a new family, so the movie is filled with different faces, including Ralph Fiennes, Ewan McGregor, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Maggie Smith.)
