Documentarian Chris Smith (American Movie, The Yes Men) looks at the causes for the economic crisis in Collapse, released on DVD on June 15, 2010, from MPI Media Group.

The 80-minute documentary features former Los Angeles police officer turned investigative journalist Michael Ruppert, who predicted the current financial crash five years ago. As Ruppert says in Collapse: “It’s not that Bernie Madoff is a pyramid scheme. The whole economy is a pyramid scheme.” Ruppert warns of a new meltdown rooted in economics, covert U.S. policies and a seemingly inevitable oil shortage.

Priced at $19.98 on DVD, Collapse was an Official Selection at the 2009 Toronto International Film Festival and 2009 Berlin International Film Festival. Variety called the movie “less a wake-up call than a four-alarm fire.”

Meanwhile, PBS explored the state of health care in two Frontline documentaries issued on June 29, 2010.

Obama’s Deal: Inside the Battle for Health Care Reform details the struggles of the president as he worked to take on one of Washington’s toughest issues: health care. Veteran Frontline producer Michael Kirk (Bush’s War, Dreams of Obama) look’s at Obama’s first year in office, when he found himself making deals with lobbyists and influential members of Congress, angered his political base, watched his popularity sink and nearly failed to pass the bill. The documentary reveals the realities of American politics, the power of special interest groups, and the role of money in policy making.

The Vaccine War goes behind the scenes in a growing national debate over vaccines and their impact on people’s health.

On July 20, 2010, Smithsonian Networks and Infinity Entertainment Group released the documentary White House Revealed, which delves into the history of the President’s house from pets to scandals. Martin Sheen narrates the program, which interviews White House staff including maids, assistants, chefs, plumbers, engineers and florists, among others, and 41st President George H.W. Bush. The 51-minute documentary also contains still photos, oral histories and video footage.

Priced at $14.98 on DVD, White House Revealed is presented in letterbox with 5.1 Dolby Digital Surround Sound.
