New Release: When We Leave DVD

When We Leave movie scene

Sibel Kekilli deserves all happiness she can get in When We Leave.

Olive Films released the critically acclaimed drama When We Leave, Germany’s official selection for the 2010 Academy Awards, on DVD on June 7, 2011.

Written and directed by German actress Feo Aladag, the foreign film concerns Umay (Sibel Kekilli), a German-born woman of Turkish descent, who flees from her oppressive marriage in Istanbul, taking her son with her.

She hopes to find a better life with her family in Berlin, but her unexpected arrival creates intense conflicts. Umay’s family is trapped in their conventions, and they’re torn between their love for her and the traditional values of their community.

A big winner at film festivals across the world (the movie picked up prizes in Berlin, Sao Paulo, Calgary, Athens and, or course, Germany), When We Leave played a bunch of festivals in the U.S. and received a limited Stateside release in theaters in January.

The DVD carries a list price of $29.95.
