Saving Mr. BanksSaving Mr. Banks tells the contentious history of one of the most jolly children’s musical movies.

Tom Hanks (Road to Perdition) stars as Walt Disney, who’s pulling out all the stops to fulfill a promise he made to his daughters: to adapt the book Mary Poppins into a movie. The problem is, the book’s author, P.L. Travers (Emma Thompson, Nanny McPhee Returns), isn’t too thrilled about a Hollywood version of her work, and she does everything she can to stop it.

Along the way, the two must learn about each other’s childhoods to find a way to meet in the middle.

Rated PG-13, Saving Mr. Banks also stars Colin Farrell (Horrible Bosses), Paul Giamatti (Barney’s Version), Bradley Whitford (The Cabin in the Woods), B.J. Novak (TV’s The Office) and Jason Schwartzman (Rushmore). It was directed by John Lee Hancock (The Blind Side), from a script by Kelly Marcel (TV’s Terra Nova) and Sue Smith (My Brother Jack).

The film was a hit with critics and moviegoers, grossing $82 million in theaters.

Saving Mr. Banks Blu-ray boxThe DVD has just one bonus feature: the deleted scene “Nanny Song,” in which the Sherman Brothers composers perform a song that P.L. Travers is less than thrilled about.

The Blu-ray adds:

  • two more deleted scenes:
    • “Stargaze,” in which a picture on Walt’s desk leads to a flashback of P.L. Travers’ childhood
    • and “Pam Leaves,” about another disagreement between Walt and P.L. Travers that ends with Travers heading for the airport
  • two featurettes:
    • “The Walt Disney Studios: From Poppins to Present” with director John Lee Hancock on a tour of the lot, reflecting on studio life during the making of Mary Poppins
    • and “Let’s Go Fly a Kite,” with the cast and crew breaking out in a tribute to the composer Richard Sherman on the last day of filming
  • downloadable digital copy of the film.

All the special features are available with Saving Mr. Banks digitally, depending on the retailer.
