Tom Hanks (Cloud Atlas) finds danger at sea again in Captain Phillips, and this time it’s based on a true story.
The drama movie focuses on the relationship between Phillips, captain of the U.S. container ship Maersk Alabama and the Somali pirate captain (newcomer Barkhad Abdi) who takes Phillips hostage 145 miles off the Somali coast. Both men are at the mercy of forces beyond their control, leading up to the U.S. Navy’s rescue.
Based on the 2009 events, the film was nominated for four Golden Globe awards: Best Motion Picture, Paul Greengrass (Green Zone) for Best Director, Hanks for Best Actor and Abdi for Best Supporting Actor. The Screen Actors Guild also nominated Hanks and Adbi for its honors.
Rated PG-13, Captain Phillips also stars Catherine Keener (Trust), Michael Chernus (TV’s Orange Is the New Black) and Chris Mulkey (The Purge). The movie grossed a tidy $104 million in theaters, to huge acclaim from critics.
