Shame movie scene

Michael Fassbender does New York in Shame.

Michael Fassbender (Centurion) and Carey Mulligan (The Greatest) star in the 2011 drama Shame, one of 2011’s most talked-about, character-driven film.

The movie focuses on Brandon (Fassbender), a New Yorker with a solid career and home who shuns intimacy with women but feeds his desires with a compulsive addiction to sex. When Brandon’s wayward and needy younger sister Sissy (Mulligan) moves into his apartment and stirs up memories of their shared painful past, Brandon’s insular life begins to spiral dangerously out of control.

A film festival powerhouse, Shame was co-written and directed by British filmmaker Steve McQueen, whose previous movie, 2008’s Hunger (a drama about Irish republican Bobby Sands’ infamous 1981 hunger strike), also starred Fassbender. Like that film, Shame offers an uncompromising look at the results of its protagonist’s unhealthy drives.

The film grossed some $4 million since it began its limited run in U.S. theaters in December 2011.

The Blu-ray/DVD combo pack offers the following supplements:

  • “Focus on Michael Fassbender”
  • director Steve McQueen
  • “The Story of Shame”
  • “A Shared Vision”
  • “Fox Movie Channel Presents: In Character With Michael Fassbender”
  • theatrical trailer
