The DictatorBritish comedian Sacha Baron Cohen (Hugo) takes his outrageous style of laughs to dictatorships in the movie The Dictator, on DVD and Blu-ray in a Banned* and Unrated edition.

In the film, Cohen plays Admiral General Aladeen, the inept Third World ruler of Wadiya, who’s stripped of his power and forced to live his biggest nightmare — the American dream.

Anna Faris (What’s Your Number?), Ben Kingsley (Shutter Island), Chris Parnell (21 Jump Street) and Jessica St. Clair (Bridesmaids) also star in the comedy.

The Dictator wasn’t loved by critics or moviegoers as much as Baron’s hilarious first film, Borat, but moviegoers did like it better than the comedian’s second movie, Bruno. Admittedly, that one was truly terrible.

The R-rated film grossed a decent $59 million in theaters, which was marginally lower than the awful Bruno, but moviegoers who did see The Dictator on the big screen liked it better.

Both the DVD and the Blu-ray/DVD Combo have the theatrcal version and an unrated version of the film with 20 minutes more footage. Plus, both discs have these special features:

  • Larry King Interview
  • Deleted and extended scenes
    • Newsnight Interview
    • Meet Clayton
    • Computer Store
    • Manhattan Zoo
    • A Gift for Zoey
    • The Birthing
  • Downloadable or streamable digital copy via UltraViolet

The Blu-ray also contains these extra bonuses:

    • A Final Word
  • Music video: Best Love Song “Your Money’s On the Dresser”

The * in the title refers to the theatrical version of the movie being banned in Malaysia and the Republics of Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan.

But according to the DVD and Blu-ray press release, The Dictator won Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Director, Best Writer, Best Costumes, Best Simulated Sex Scene, Best Actual Sex Scene, Best Torture Scene, Best Sound Mix and Least Jewish Actor at the 2012 Wadiyan Academy Awards. Now that’s dictatorship for you.
