Superpower DVDBarbara-Anne Steegmuller’s 2008 documentary film Superpower examines America’s economic and military policies since World War II, presenting its view of America’s ‘Grand Strategy’ and what many consider to be the military-industrial complex at its heart.

In his 1961 farewell speech, President Dwight D. Eisenhower spoke cautiously of the subject explored in Superpower: “We must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence whether sought or unsought by the military industrial complex, the potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced powers exists and will persist. We must never let the weight of this combination endanger our liberties or democratic process.”

The film suggests that Eisenhower’s warnings went unheeded while offering insights into what is driving U.S. foreign policy via dozens of interviews with notable experts and activists, including historian Noam Chomsky; Command Sergeant Major (Ret) Eric Haney (Founder of Delta Force, the Army’s counterterrorism arm); William Blum, expert on CIA interventions; and Lt. Col (Ret) Karen U. Kwiatkowski, a noted critic of the U.S. government’s involvement in Iraq.

Superpower has made some noise on the festival circuit: It won Best North American Documentary in The El Sawy International Film Festival Egypt in 2009, as well as The Director’s Selection Award at the Twin Cities Arts Festival in North Carolina in 2008. Director Steegmuller also won the Director Award at the August Sun Film and Television Festival in Los Angeles in 2008.
