Fourteen-year-old Laurence Fishburne, in his first film, and Jamaal “Silk” Wilkes in Cornbread, Earl and Me.

Wilkes plays Cornbread, a high school basketball player headed to college on an athletic scholarship. Being the first athlete from his district to go to college because of his athletic achievements, he gives his neighborhood optimism that others will be able to do the same. But tragedy strikes–Cornbread is shot dead by police after being mistaken for a criminal– leaving his friends and family to cope with an even more devastating aftermath.

What’s the most blaxploitation-est element in this relatively tame PG-rated entry? The requisite funk soundtrack  by The Blackbyrds, a fusion outfit put together by Donald Byrd best known for the ’75 hit “Walkin’ in Rhythm.”

Dig “One-Gun Salute” the brassy opening titles number from the Cornbread soundtrack!
